Dental Sealants vs. Silver Diamine Fluoride: What’s the Difference?

Cavities are still the most common oral health issue affecting children today, but the good news is that modern pediatric dentistry offers more ways than ever to prevent and manage them. Two treatments that often come up in conversation are dental sealants and silver diamine fluoride (SDF). While they may sound similar, they actually serve very different purposes. At Smiles University Pediatric Dentistry, we use both as part of a comprehensive approach to keeping your child’s smile healthy. Here’s how each one works.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment applied to healthy teeth; specifically, the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars, where deep pits and grooves can trap food and bacteria. The thin, tooth-colored resin bonds to the enamel and creates a smooth protective barrier, making these areas much easier to keep clean and significantly less prone to decay. Sealants are quick, painless, and can protect teeth for several years with proper care.

What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?

Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid treatment used to stop active tooth decay in its tracks. When applied directly to a cavity, the silver component kills the bacteria that cause decay, while fluoride helps strengthen the surrounding enamel and prevent further breakdown. SDF is especially helpful for young children who may not yet be ready for traditional fillings, for patients with special healthcare needs, or for situations where a conservative, non-invasive approach is preferred.

One thing to know: SDF causes the treated decay to turn dark, often black. This is a normal part of how the treatment works, and it’s a sign that the decay has been stabilized. In areas where appearance is a concern, we can often discuss options to help minimize the visibility.

So, Which One Does My Child Need?

This is where it’s important to understand that sealants and SDF aren’t competing options; they’re tools used for completely different situations:

  • Sealants prevent cavities from forming on healthy teeth.
  • SDF stops cavities that have already started.

In other words, a child with strong, healthy molars may benefit from sealants as a preventive measure, while a child with early decay may be a candidate for SDF to halt the problem without drilling. Many children benefit from both at different times.
