What is ICON Resin Infiltration?

ICON resin infiltration is a minimally invasive treatment for early enamel damage on permanent teeth. Instead of cutting away tooth structure, a thin liquid resin is drawn into the microscopic pores inside a weakened area of enamel, where it hardens and seals the lesion from the inside.

That does two useful things:

  • It blocks the pathway acid uses to spread. An early cavity isn't a hole; it's a sponge-like network of pores under an intact enamel surface. Filling those pores with resin cuts off the route decay travels, which halts the lesion where it is.
  • It makes white spots much harder to see. A white spot looks white because the porous enamel scatters light differently than healthy enamel. Once the resin fills those pores, light passes through more normally, and the spot blends into the surrounding tooth.

ICON is a good fit for:

  • White spot lesions from demineralization, most commonly after orthodontic treatment
  • Early decay between the teeth (interproximal) that is still confined to enamel or just past it, and has not broken through into a physical hole
  • Kids and teens who are anxious about needles and drills

ICON is not a fit for:

  • Cavities that have already cavitated. Once there's an actual hole in the tooth, it needs a filling. ICON for teeth is a sealing treatment, not a restoration.
  • Deep decay, or decay that has reached the nerve
  • Baby teeth in most cases; ICON resin infiltration is used on permanent teeth
  • Every white spot. Marks caused by fluorosis or developmental conditions such as molar-incisor hypomineralization respond differently and may only partially improve.

How Does an Appointment for ICON Resin Infiltration Work?

  • Exam and X-rays. We confirm the lesion is early enough to infiltrate. A cavity that's already cavitated gets a different plan.
  • Isolation. We place a device to keep the tooth dry and protect the gums and lips. For lesions between teeth, we may first place a small separator.
  • Surface etch. A gel is applied to open the sealed outer layer of enamel so the resin can get in. This removes a very thin surface layer, a fraction of the thickness of a human hair, and requires no numbing.
  • Drying. The tooth is rinsed and dried thoroughly. At this stage, we can often preview how well the spot will respond.
  • Infiltration. The ICON resin is applied and allowed to soak into the porous enamel, usually in two applications.
  • Curing. A blue light hardens the resin inside the tooth, and we polish the surface to a smooth finish.

Does My Child Need ICON Resin Infiltration?

That takes an exam. White spots and early interproximal decay both look similar to many other conditions that aren't treated the same way, and the deciding factor is usually what the X-ray and the surface texture reveal, not what's visible in the mirror at home.

ICON Resin Infiltration for White Spots After Braces

White spots after orthodontic treatment are common, and they're not a hygiene failure on your child's part. Brackets and wires create areas where plaque accumulates against the enamel and slowly pulls minerals from it. When the braces come off, the demineralized areas show up as chalky white outlines.

If those spots are recent, we often try fluoride or a remineralizing paste first, since early enamel damage can genuinely re-harden on its own with help. When spots have stabilized but are still visible, ICON for teeth is usually the next step, and it's a far more conservative option than veneers or bonding.

ICON Resin Infiltration for Early Cavities Between the Teeth

Decay between the back teeth is a place we watch closely, because you can't see it and your child can't feel it. It shows up on an X-ray, often long before it becomes a hole.

If we catch a lesion at that stage, we have a real choice: watch it, strengthen it with fluoride and better flossing, or seal it with ICON resin infiltration. Infiltrating an early lesion can stop it from progressing and preserve tooth structure that would otherwise be drilled away later. It's the difference between managing a problem and repairing one.
