Sprig Zirconia Dental Crowns for Kids - Bastrop, TX
Tooth-Colored Crowns for Baby Teeth
When a baby tooth has decay too extensive for a filling, a crown can protect it until it falls out naturally. Stainless steel crowns have long been the standard and are still the best choice in some situations. For many children, though, we also offer Sprig zirconia crowns, a tooth-colored option that restores the tooth without the silver look. Call Smiles University Pediatric Dentistry to schedule a consultation.

What is a Sprig Zirconia Crown?
Sprig zirconia dental crowns are prefabricated crowns made of solid zirconia, a strong, tooth-colored ceramic used throughout dentistry. They come in a range of sizes for baby teeth, both front and back, so your child's dentist can pick the right fit and place it in the same visit. No molds or lab wait are needed.
The Sprig Zirconia Dental Crown Process
- Numbing and comfort: We numb the tooth and surrounding area with local anesthetic. If your child is anxious or needs extra help relaxing, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or sedation when needed.
- Preparing the tooth: We remove the decay and shape the tooth to fit the crown. Unlike stainless steel crowns, zirconia can't be bent or crimped, so the tooth is shaped to fit the crown instead.
- Fitting: We choose the correctly sized crown and check the fit.
- Cementing: The crown is cemented in place. Sprig crowns have internal grooves designed to help hold the cement and keep the crown secure.
Your child leaves with a restored, tooth-colored tooth in a single appointment.
The Benefits of Getting a Sprig Zirconia Dental Crown
- Natural appearance: Zirconia is tooth-colored, so the crown blends in with your child's smile.
- Metal-free: A good option for children with sensitivities to the nickel in stainless steel crowns.
- Strong: Zirconia is one of the strongest dental ceramics and holds up well to everyday chewing.
- Lasts as long as the baby tooth: A well-placed crown is designed to stay on until the tooth falls out naturally. Good brushing, flossing, and regular checkups still matter for the rest of your child's teeth and gums.
Is My Child a Good Candidate for Sprig Zirconia Crowns?
Not every tooth is a fit for a zirconia crown. Your child's dentist will consider how much healthy tooth structure remains, how crowded the teeth are, and how well the area can be kept dry during placement. In some cases, a stainless steel crown is the more reliable choice, and we'll walk you through the options.
